Our History

Artichoke Dance Company was co-founded by University of Michigan alumni Amy Drum, Daniel Gwirtzman and Lynn Neuman in 1995 and operated as a collective for four years. Mr. Gwirtzman ceded to form his own group in 1999; Ms. Neuman assumed sole direction of the company in 2005. Artichoke has held seventeen New York seasons and toured nationally and internationally.

Since 2005, the company has been been presented at Danspace Project at St. Mark’s Church, PS122, 92nd Street Y, Dixon Place, American Theatre of Actors, University Settlement, and Symphony Space. The company has been presented at festivals including Fringe NYC, Dance/Now NYC, DUMBO Arts Festival, the Philadelphia Fringe Festival, and the Piccolo Spoleto Festival. Recent commissions include Mondo Cane! from Dixon Place and a co-commission from the Brooklyn Arts Council and DUMBO improvement district for the site-specific work PUBLIC. Recent touring includes Salem, VA, Roanoke, VA, Miami, FL, and Las Vegas, NV. Since 2010 our work has focused on environmental issues and included large scale upcycling projects rooted in community involvement and education.
