ABOUT immersive performance TOURs:

Combining site performances, interactive experiences and an immersive walking tour of a neighborhood. The project premiered in July 2021 bringing audiences to locations in Gowanus significant to the superfund remediation of the canal and planned rezoning of the neighborhood. Audiences are led by guides from the community who illuminate the area’s history and environmental justice issues. Four site performances are witnessed along the tour, which was initially developed in collaboration with the Gowanus Canal Conservancy and Gowanus Neighborhood Coalition for Justice supported, in part, by public funds from the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs in partnership with the City Council, as well as the Foundation for Contemporary Art and Dance/NYC.

This innovative mix of dance, information, and advocacy showcases what makes the neighborhood special while highlighting the potential changes that might rob Gowanus of its charms. Pam Wong in ArtsHag

Subsequent tours were given in June 2022 as part of the Brooklyn Utopias Along the Canal Exhibition produced by Arts Gowanus.

ARTICHOKE AND GOWANUS:

Artichoke Dance Company is a national leader in eco-arts creations, working at the intersections of performance innovation, environmental activism, education, community building and civic engagement. This project was Artichoke’s third event based in and around the community of Gowanus. In 2017, we produced Global Water Dances on the Gowanus Canal, a performance and engagement event to raise awareness about, and involvement around, Gowanus. In 2019, we produced the Gowanus Visions Festival, which showcased the work of area artists and engaged audiences with the work of local environmentally focused organizations.
